This is a quick overview of three updates to help you manage your profile. Settings used to be several clicks away on another page. Now we've moved the controls right up front, so you can see who you are sharing with right next to what you are sharing. You can quickly and easily share different information with the different groups of people in your life.

For example, let's say you want to change who can see your hometown. Click on 'edit your profile,' you can see who you are sharing your hometown with, right next to it, and can adjust to a different group of people.

When people add tags of you to their photos and posts, you receive a notification. You can choose to review tagged photos and posts before they ever appear on your profile, by turning on the profile review setting. Go to your 'privacy preferences,' go to 'how tags work,' and turn on 'profile review.'

Now, if a friend adds a tag of you on his/her photo, the photo won't appear on your profile unless you approve it. Select the check box to approve, and select the 'X' to disapprove.

Let's say you post something, and later change your mind about who you want to see it. You can adjust who can see posts and photos after you've already shared them. You can also remove posts and photos entirely.

We hope these new features make it easier for you to control what goes on your profile, and who can see what you share.

At Facebook, they are constantly developing new experiences and features to help you control your information. Some of them recent work includes simplified privacy settings and publisher privacy controls that let you select your audience every time you post something on Facebook. They plan a lot more innovations in the months ahead so check back from time to time.

However, there is more to controlling your information than just settings. It’s also important that you understand how information is used and what your choices are. That’s why the privacy team took on a new project and applied Facebook’s unconventional, innovative spirit to develop a new privacy policy written for regular people.

Many websites’ privacy policies are challenging for people to understand because they are often written for regulators and privacy advocates, not the majority of people who actually use those websites. Our own privacy policy has been criticized as being “5830 words of legalese” and "longer than the U.S. constitution – without the amendments." Okay, you're right. We agree that privacy policies can and should be more easily understood, and that inspired us to try something different.

They thought a lot about the things people really want from a privacy policy, and came up with a few basic principles:

First, it should be easy to understand, even when the concepts are complicated, or it is of no use to anyone.

Second, it should be visual and interactive, because that's the way people use the web today.

And third, it should focus on the questions people who use Facebook are most likely to ask, because that makes it relevant.

These principles are based on feedback we’ve received from thousands of people and from our ongoing conversations with privacy experts, policy makers and regulators from around the world.

So today, we’re giving you a look at our first attempt on what a privacy policy written for you could look like. You can check it out here. It’s important to note that this draft is outside of even our regular process of notice and comment. Because we're tackling a challenge that matters to so many people -- and doing it in a way that is so different from what we've done before -- we’re giving you a look even earlier in the process. If people like what we have, we’ll put it through our regular notice and comment process at a later date.

Finally, They’ve tried not to change the substance of the policy but, in our effort to simplify, we have added some new things that were elsewhere on the site (like our help center) and have made some other concepts clearer. Both adults and minors have some basic information (name, profile picture, gender and networks) appear when people navigate to their profile. This information may be accessed by applications that they and their friends use. Adults and minors both appear in search results on Facebook. However, minors do not have public search listings created for them.

In addition, the "Everyone" setting works differently for minors than it does for adults. When minors set information like photos or status updates to be visible to "Everyone," that information is actually only visible to their friends, friends of friends, and people in any verified school or work networks they have joined. The only exceptions are for "Search for me on Facebook" and "Send me friend requests," where if the minor has set those to Everyone, we respect the Everyone setting.

In Sharing on Facebook settings, you can control who can see your profile information and the content that you post, such as photos and status updates. You can choose whether things you’ve chosen to share with everyone on Facebook also shows up in searches outside of Facebook in your Public Search settings. Finally, you can manage the list of people you would like to block in the Block List.

Generally, you will have five privacy options available for each of your privacy settings: Everyone, Friends and Networks, Friends of Friends, Friends Only, and Only Me. More customized settings, such as excluding specific Friend lists, are only available on the full site. If you have already made such customized privacy settings on the full site, this setting will be selected and displayed in your mobile privacy settings page. Note that if you choose a different privacy setting than this customized one on the mobile site, you will have to go to the full site in order to re-apply this customized setting.

Unfortunately, privacy settings regarding applications and connecting to websites is not currently available on the mobile site. Keep in mind, however, that most applications are not accessible from the mobile site.

Notifications open a browser window. Notifications in the Facebook app are launching my Palm phone's web browser and pointing to an invalid page. What's wrong?

That issue has been fixed in version 1.4 (and newer). Please launch the Updates app to download and install the latest version.

Photo permissions / "Unable to open photo." I can't view my friend's photos in the app. It says I have to view that particular photo with a web browser. Why?

In order for someone's photos to be viewable through Facebook for HP webOS, the owner must enable photo sharing via the main website's privacy controls here: Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites (Edit) > Info accessible through your friends > Edit Settings and ensure that My Photos is checked. If the owner has not enabled photo sharing through applications and websites, you will not be able to see their photos in Facebook for HP webOS.

In the event someone's photos cannot be viewed in Facebook for HP webOS, the app will provide a link to view that particular photo in a web browser. If an error occurs when opening that link, login to Facebook.com with the web browser (to authenticate your account) and try again.

"Login Failed" / unable to login or add your account to the app. I can't login to the app. I keep getting a "Login Failed" error. I've verified that my email address and password are correct. What's up?

The problem isn't with your phone. Rather, it's a setting that can be toggled on (or off) on Facebook's website under the Account menu. The steps to resolve the issue and re-enable login from HP webOS apps are:

1) Under the Account menu (at the top-right of the page) -> click "Privacy Settings"

2) Under the "Applications and Websites" header -> click "Edit your settings"

3) Under the "What you're using" header -> click "Turn on platform"

Status permissions / Unable to post status updates. I can't update my status from the app. I get an error message that reads “The user has not granted the application the permission to automatically publish feed stories.” How can I fix this?

Please visit Facebook's website on your computer and navigate to Account > Application Settings > Facebook for HP webOS (click "Edit Settings") and ensure that all permissions boxes are checked.

Password issues. I've recently changed my Facebook password, and now I need to update my password in Facebook for HP webOS. How can I do that?

Just launch Facebook for HP webOS, then swipe down from the top-left corner (to bring down the app menu). Tap on Preferences & Accounts, then tap on your Facebook username (which is the email address you used to register with Facebook). Type your new password into the empty field and tap Sign In.

Clearing / marking all notifications read. How do I clear all of my notifications?

Tap on the globe in the top-left corner of the app, then tap See All Notifications to clear all of your current notifications. Perform a back gesture or tap on the Facebook logo at the top of the screen to go back to your news feed.

Calendar / event times. My Facebook events are always off by a few hours. What's wrong?

Timezones are not supported by Facebook's calendar API, and as such all Facebook events default to Pacific Standard Time (PST), where Facebook's offices are located. If you live in New York (EST/+3 hours) or London (UTC/+8 hours) for example, events will always be displayed in PST. In Facebook for HP webOS 1.3 or newer, events will be shown in the proper local time.

Service Method Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException. When I try logging in to Facebook for HP webOS, I get an error message and nothing happens. What's wrong?

That error has been known to appear for some users who have previously installed preware or other unofficial patches. A partial reset will resolve the issue. On your HP webOS phone navigate to Device Info -> Reset Options -> Erase Apps & Data. Don't worry, your apps, account settings, bookmarks and notes will be restored once your phone restarts and you sign back into your Palm Profile. Some data, like text messages, are not backed up to your Palm Profile and will be lost during the reset.

White screen. When launching Facebook for HP webOS, a blank white screen appears. How can I fix that?

Please update your phone to the latest release of HP webOS. Close Facebook for HP webOS and all other running apps, then launch the Updates app to download and install the latest release of HP webOS available for your phone. Be sure to keep your phone plugged in during the process, as it can take half an hour or longer. Once the update is complete, Facebook for HP webOS will work properly.

Show / hide comments in the news feed. How can I enable or disable comments in the news feed?

Launch Facebook for HP webOS, then swipe down from the top-left corner (to bring down the app menu). Tap on Preferences & Accounts, then switch Show Comments in Feed on or off.

Jumping to the top / bottom of news feed. How can I quickly jump to the top or bottom of my news feed?

Just tap on the Facebook logo at the top of the app.

Administering fan pages. Can I administer my page with the app?

Somewhat. You can find your pages by tapping the grid to the right of the Facebook logo, then tapping Search, then tapping Pages. Scroll to the page you are an admin for, then tap on it to view the wall. You can post status updates and reply to comments as an admin. If you need additional functionality, use your HP webOS phone's web browser to visit Facebook's full site at facebook.com/home.php

Deleting status updates or wall posts. Can I delete my status updates or remove wall posts from other people using the app?

Not at this time. However, if you'd like to remove one of your status updates or a wall post, you can do so using the web browser and Facebook's full site. Just launch your HP webOS phone's web browser and visit facebook.com/home.php. Be sure to avoid tapping on the Facebook logo at the top-left corner of the site, since that image links to facebook.com and will always redirect mobile browsers to the mobile website.

Shake to reload Can I turn shake to reload off?

Yes. Swipe down from the top-left corner (to bring down the app menu), then tap on Preferences & Account. There you can toggle Shake to Reload off.

Friend requests. Can I manage my friend requests with the app?

Not at this time. However, you can manage friend requests by visiting facebook.com with your HP webOS phone's web browser.

Profile picture. Can I change my profile picture with the app?

To block a Facebook app or person from appearing in your news feed, you need to visit the full site on your computer. Hover your mouse's cursor over the app or person you would like to hide, then click on the Hide button that appears over the top-right corner of the offending entry. You'll be given the option to hide either the app or the person who created the entry. Once you've hidden an app or a person from your news feed, they will no longer be shown in any of your feeds - either on the website or in mobile apps like Facebook for HP webOS. Please note: Many apps and games are very similar. You have to hide each app individually in order to prevent them from appearing in your feed.

3. Why can't we copy from the mobile app? – Tony

Answer: While you cannot copy or paste text from the app, you can copy text from the mobile site, which is easy to get to from the app. Just push Menu>Go to Mobile Site. Once you are there, copy and paste just like you would anywhere, Menu> Copy or Menu>Paste.

Facebook works to create a trusted environment, especially around Facebook Pages. This environment helps define the identities of the people and brands with which you interact. Usernames for Facebook Pages communicate this identity and make it easier for people to find and interact with your Page. People can enter the Facebook username as a search term on Facebook or on search engines to locate your Page. In addition, usernames allow public entities to easily promote their presence on Facebook with a short URL. This username can be used in marketing communications, company website, and business cards.

When 25 or more people are connected to your page, you can select a username for your Facebook Page by visiting www.facebook.com/username. Photos are one of the things people love to share, and they are often the most meaningful. Sometimes it's snapshots of the ordinary—your new haircut, a homemade cupcake. Sometimes it's bigger, more profound—a high-school graduation, a first tooth, a newborn! Photos often bring us the best news of the day.

When we originally got started on Photos, we only had two people working on it. We didn't build out a lot of features; we just focused on making sure photos were easy to share and this made Photos a great social experience. But we also wanted to give people on Facebook the best quality photo product on the web.

So I'm excited to announce three big improvements to Photos: high resolution images so you can store bigger pictures, a better viewer for browsing photos, and a simpler uploader when you have lots of images. The team has been working hard to get these done, and we'll make these available to everyone over the next month.

Higher Resolution

Starting today, we will be rolling out support for print-quality, high-resolution photos. And unlike on many other online services, you don't need any kind of premium or paid account.

We're increasing the size of the photos stored from 720 pixels to 2048 pixels on the largest edge, for an 8 times increase overall. I'm really excited to be launching this feature. To see the quality of these pictures, you can view National Geographic's "Top-Rated Your Shot Photos (September)" album or Sports Illustrated's "Football Across America" album. Download high-resolution photos by clicking the "Download" link.

A Better Photo Viewer

The new viewer makes it simpler and faster to navigate photos. You can now view photos and even whole albums without even having to go to a new page. Instead, the photo opens in the center of your screen, and you close it when you're done. There's no need to go back and forth between pages or reload the page.

A new light box (the dark frame around your pictures) makes viewing photos a richer experience. We also rewrote all the code for the viewer from scratch, so paging through photos will be noticeably faster.

Easier Tagging and Uploading

We also wanted to make it easier to tag photos. When people upload a set of photos, they are often of events like weddings and birthday parties where people are with the same group of friends and family. With our new uploader, you will be able to tag multiple photos in the same album all at once, as well as tag photos of the same person with a lot less effort.

Lastly, we've completely rebuilt our photo uploader to be more stable and reliable. It now uses the latest Flash technology, so that your experience getting photos onto Facebook is an easy one—especially when you have lots of them. While this change is mostly behind the scenes, we think you'll notice a big improvement.

Congress Grills Zuckerberg On Plans To Share User Addresses, Cell Numbers

Last month, Facebook told developers they’d be able to get users’ current address and mobile-phone numbers. Even though the feature would have required getting explicit permission from users, apparently it didn’t go over too well in some parts. Three days later, Facebook put the feature on hold while it works on a better procedure to make it explicit to users when exactly they’re granting access to their most direct contact information.

But now two members of Congress want to know more about these plans—the Republican and Democratic co-chairs of the Congressional Privacy Caucus sent Mark Zuckerberg a letter asking for a lot more detail about his plans for user phone numbers and addresses.

The co-chairs, Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Joe Barton (R-Texas), have 11 different questions they’ve posed to Zuckerberg. Once this new sharing feature is re-enabled, they want to know exactly what will be shared—and they want to know a lot more about how Facebook came up with this idea in the first place.

Among other things, Barton and Markey would like Facebook to explain how it decided to suspend the rollout of this feature in the first place. And if users opt in once, will they be able to have that information deleted if they later decide that sharing was a bad idea?

There’s also an undertone of annoyance that Facebook would go ahead and roll out such a feature given that the company acknowledged last year that sharing Facebook User IDs with app developers did raise privacy issues. The company told the same two Congressmen in October that it was “in the process of making a technical change to address the issue.” If Facebook saw the light and realized that User IDs were sensitive info, how could it think that users’ home addresses and mobile phone numbers—“even more sensitive information” than a User ID—should be easily accessed by developers?

Facebook has until Feb. 23 to answer the letter. Given the tone of the letter—and the fact that online privacy is quickly becoming a topic of interest among both parties on Capitol Hill—this is one feature that Facebook might be putting on ice for awhile.

Fake Facebook Security page sending out phishing messages

Phishers have rolled out a new tactic to target Facebook users - they are misusing the name of legitimate Facebook Security page and sending out warnings about an imminent deactivation of the users' account because of suspicious activity detected on it:

Following the offered link takes the potential victims to a page where they are asked to enter the login credentials in order to "reactivate" their account, and then the login credentials to webmail account tied to the Facebook account and their date of birth.

Setting aside the grammatical errors these pages are rife with, these requests are a definite indication that this is a scam. Also, the account from which the warning is sent is called Fåceböok ªecurity, and that must surely raise some suspicions.

But the phishers clearly have faith in this approach, because Trend Micro researchers' investigation in the matter revealed there are a number of profiles registered under the same variation (same diacritic marks) of the Facebook Security name.

Users who have fallen for this scam are advised to reset the passwords on their Facebook and webmail accounts and to refrain from following links in unsolicited messages in the future.

Some Fixes for the Duck Pond/Ducklings

We've issued a few updates today to help alleviate some of the issues with Duck Ponds (mainly having to do with not being able to pick a Duck to choose from when you get your neighbors to help you out) and players receiving an incorrect message when accepting a Duckling help request. We're continuing to work on the issue where players cannot ask for help for their Ducklings.

A Continued Commitment to Security

This Friday is Data Privacy Day, an international effort by governments, businesses and advocacy groups to raise awareness about the importance of staying in control of personal information. A key part of controlling information has always been protecting it from security threats like viruses, malware and hackers.

That's why we've developed a number of complex systems that operate behind the scenes to keep you secure on Facebook. In addition, we've created some advanced features you can use to help protect yourself even more, such as remote logout and one-time passwords. These features are especially useful when you're uncertain whether your network or computer is secure. Today, we're announcing two new such features.

A Secured Connection

If you've ever done your shopping or banking online, you may have noticed a small "lock" icon appear in your address bar, or that the address bar has turned green. This indicates that your browser is using a secure connection ("HTTPS") to communicate with the website and ensure that the information you send remains private. Facebook currently uses HTTPS whenever your password is sent to us, but today we're expanding its usage in order to help keep your data even more secure.

Starting today we'll provide you with the ability to experience Facebook entirely over HTTPS. You should consider enabling this option if you frequently use Facebook from public Internet access points found at coffee shops, airports, libraries or schools. The option will exist as part of our advanced security features, which you can find in the "Account Security" section of the Account Settings page.

There are a few things you should keep in mind before deciding to enable HTTPS. Encrypted pages take longer to load, so you may notice that Facebook is slower using HTTPS. In addition, some Facebook features, including many third-party applications, are not currently supported in HTTPS. We'll be working hard to resolve these remaining issues. We are rolling this out slowly over the next few weeks, but you will be able to turn this feature on in your Account Settings soon. We hope to offer HTTPS as a default whenever you are using Facebook sometime in the future.

Social Authentication

At Facebook we strive to put people at the center of all of our products and to design every experience you have on the site to be social. This is obvious in products like photos, where pictures are organized around the people that appear in them. We also want to bring the benefits of social design to experiences where you wouldn't traditionally expect them, like account security. Social authentication is our latest effort toward this goal.

The vast majority of people who have used Facebook have never experienced a security problem. However, if we detect suspicious activity on your account, like if you logged in from California in the morning and then from Australia a few hours later, we may ask you to verify your identity so we can be sure your account hasn't been compromised.

Many sites around the web use a type of challenge-response test called a captcha in their registration or purchasing flows. The purpose of this test is to verify that you are a human being and not a computer trying to game the system. Traditional captchas have a number of limitations including being (at times) incredibly hard to decipher and, since they are only meant to defend against attacks by computers, vulnerable to human hackers.

Instead of showing you a traditional captcha on Facebook, one of the ways we may help verify your identity is through social authentication. We will show you a few pictures of your friends and ask you to name the person in those photos. Hackers halfway across the world might know your password, but they don't know who your friends are.
